Hello everybody, Dr. Stillman here and today we are going to be talking about hidden causes of allergies, which is one of my favorite topics. So, allergies, one of my fascinations in terms of disease processes, and one of the things that I most commonly see patients for they’re struggling with their allergic symptoms, the experts, they’ve been to haven’t provided them with solid answers. They’re frustrated, they’re disappointed. They don’t know what to eat. They’ve gone to the nutritionist and the naturopath and the chiropractor. That’s after they already saw the gastroenterologist, an allergist and their GP and the neurologist and this and then that and the other thing. Okay, so let’s talk about all the things that are creating an epidemic of allergic disease in modern life, most of which the, you know, experts are not paying attention to and they’re not teaching you how to understand and potentially mitigate. Okay. All right. So hidden causes of allergies, allergies were uncommon just a century ago. really remarkable how they’ve taken off since then they’re extremely common, they’re becoming more severe, we’re seeing more and more cases where patients just have absolutely, amazingly out of control, allergies, and they are crippling some of our best and brightest because it really, this is affecting young people who are in the prime of life or young children who may have the course of their whole childhood derailed by the severity of their allergic diseases. And I want to be clear what I’m talking about here, I’m talking about any disease linked to the immune system that can have an allergic trigger. Many of these illnesses don’t have an apparent trigger. So for example, asthma or atopic dermatitis, some people never find the trigger for these illnesses. But if you dig hard enough, in almost any of these cases, you will find many things in the environment that you can correct that yield results and improvement in the patient’s clinical status. Okay. Why is all this happening? It’s not in our genetics. How do we know this allergic diseases as I said before, were once rare now they are common, our genome hasn’t changed our environment has. So let’s start with the fundamental premises I always work with what is disease. Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine said the greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it. illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue they are developed from small daily sins against nature. When enough Sins of accumulated illnesses will suddenly appear. The physician treats but nature heals. I’m here to give you insight to empower you with information so that you can achieve excellent health. None of this should be construed as medical advice. Watching This Video does not constitute doctor patient relationship with me. I encourage you to seek out a qualified practitioner before making changes to your diet, lifestyle or environment. If you enjoy this video, I encourage you to sign up for my newsletter. And if you’re ready to achieve optimal health and well being apply to work with me at Stillman, MD calm. So what’s causing the rise in allergies today? All right, toxic air, toxic water, artificial light, non native EMF, and unhealthy food. We’re going to unpack each of these today and talk about how they’re contributing to this. So what are allergic diseases? Alright, so they are situations in which our immune system is now attacking harmless things from our environment, our immune systems, whenever they encounter something, have to make a decision? Are they going to tolerate it? Or are they going to attack it?
Unknown Speaker 3:14
Right? You need it to attack the things that can make you sick and kill you, right? parasites, bacteria, fungi, right? But you need them to tolerate things like grass pollen, or dust mite or cat dander or whatever, right? When your immune systems exposed in a natural way, it’s more likely to tolerate those things. We’ve created all these changes in our environment, so that our immune systems are getting confused. And we’re gonna unpack what that means, during this video. If your immune system did not know how to tell the difference between things that are bad things that are harmless, it would waste all of its time attacking things that were harmless and not attacking things that are dangerous. This is why paradoxically, patients who have immunological problems will end up with severe infections. In other words, their immune system is wasting its time and resources, attacking things that don’t matter. And then that leaves the patient vulnerable to things that do matter. So the key question when we’re talking about allergies is how do we lose tolerance to the things in our environment that we then become allergic to. So loss of tolerance. There’s so much literature on this, it’s insane. And yet, there’s not a clear blueprint for people to maintain tolerance in their children or themselves. That’s why I’m making this video. So tolerance depends upon a couple key ingredients, healthy metabolism, proper nutrition, normal and natural exposure to foreign materials, you can become allergic to almost anything and if you go back to the literature and look at the experimental models, a lot of the ways that they study allergies is they’ll do something crazy, like stuffed things into a mouse’s nose or put it in the mouse’s, like abdominal cavity. It’s crazy what they do to these poor animals. At the end of the day, you need to have natural exposure, proper exposure to stress and time to rest and recharge. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a situation where I’m talking to a patient, and they’re doing something absolutely crazy, that causes them all this insane stress, they never slow down, they never relax, stress and your stress response has a lot to do with how your immune system actually works. And then you need a clean environment that’s free of toxic chemicals. Because if you’re constantly being exposed to these things, there’s a very good chance that you’re eventually going to become sensitized to them. And that’s your body trying to get rid of these things that are poisoning you. And when I tell my patients who are struggling with reactions to things in their environment is Look, if you’re reacting to this thing, there’s a good chance it’s bad for you and your immune system is trying to get you the message that you need to remove this thing from your life. Okay? When you rob the body of these basic ingredients for health, diseases, the result, allergies is just one of the problems people end up getting. Alright, so what happens when your environment becomes unhealthy, your immune system can get confused, and then it will do one of two things, it will either attack your own body that’s autoimmunity, or it may attack harmless things in your environment that’s allergy. The body perceives the immune system perceives what is harmless as potentially dangerous, and then attacks it. Generally speaking, it uses a very specific arm of the immune system, which is IGA and mast cells and bass felson. You know, whatever. I’m speaking very broadly, very generally, about any adverse reaction to something in your environment that’s harmless. That’s a unpacking What that means is this discussion for another day. I become convinced all this comes back, fundamentally to the environment. Not that other things can have an effect, but you have to understand how your environment is affecting your immune system. So we’re going to talk about air water light, EMF and food today, and how they can affect your predisposition to develop allergic illnesses. So air, believe it or not what and how we breathe can have a major impact on your immune system. Most people are aware that air pollution is a problem, but they don’t realize that actually how they breathe can affect their immune system. In a perfect world, the human body is is optimized to breathe through the nose. And to not breathe that quickly. This allows you to then over breathe, when you have to exercise gives you better cardio respiratory fitness or capacity. So the people who breathe the least, the lowest volume of air per minute, have generally speaking, the healthiest breathing mechanics, they’re also the healthiest and most capable athletes, athletes get a huge benefit out of improving their breathing mechanics. And if you want to learn about that, I encourage you to check out the oxygen advantage with Patrick McCown, whose course I took this past summer. But the bottom line here is that mouth breathing is associated with worse allergies, asthma, and atopic dermatitis, all of which are allergic diseases. So just by changing how you breathe, you can radically alter the course of these diseases. Obviously, you have to stick with it, you have to be careful with it, you have to do it properly. This is one of the things that I work with on my patients one on one,
Unknown Speaker 7:59
air pollution associated very strongly with allergic diseases, they can confuse the immune system because many of these toxins have have properties in the immune system for immune signaling. So for example, ozone, nitric oxide, these things can cause a cascade of inflammatory pathways in the immune system that will change what your immune system is responding to particulate matters and other thing, dust in your environment accumulates and recirculates. And unless you’re not changing out air filters and you’re not filtering your air properly, or you’re not eliminating the particulate matter airing out your home opening the doors and windows that can accumulate and you then have a higher disposition or predisposition to have more allergies, or any kind of respiratory symptoms. Air Pollution also block sunlight from reaching the earth. This means less UVB light, this means less vitamin D production. This is very strongly and robustly associated with more allergic disease. And that’s also why vitamin D deficiencies associated with autoimmune diseases as well. All of this is linked together. Okay. And this is why, you know, generally speaking kids in rural areas have lower rates of allergic disease. There’s more that we’re going to unpack when we talk about light and water as well. I’m going to go over all these topics in more detail in future webinars so we can really impact how you for example, in more detail how air pollution or breathing mechanics can affect your risk of allergic illnesses. Water Okay, in nature, we are exposed to a natural mix of minerals in our water. This has been lost on many clinicians, public health experts, whatever, but there’s a very robust literature showing that hard water and ingesting hard water from say, Oh well, it’s got a lot of calcium, magnesium, potassium, other cat ionic minerals, is associated with longevity, right? There’s a mixed literature on this and atopic dermatitis, but I don’t, I don’t particularly do the studies were done. At the end of the day. What I want to make sure of in my patients is that they have healthy, normal balanced mineral levels. One of the ways that I see people, depriving themselves of minerals in our environment is falling for the trope that salt is bad for you. Salt sea salt specifically contains a very nice mix of minerals that can really help you to eating low mineral foods. But three drinking lots of filtered water or tap water that doesn’t have any kind of healthy mineral content to it at all. This is one reason why a lot of people who come to work with me who have been drinking water has reverse osmosis water filtered water often have problems with their minerals, they didn’t realize it, but their minerals are being leached out by drinking tap or reverse osmosis filtered water. So this is a very important piece of the puzzle is making sure that you’ve got normal mineral levels, part of that is understanding what’s in your water. There are lots of toxic chemicals that are found our way into our water supplies, these have very powerful effects on our hormones, and our hormones have a very powerful effect on our immune systems. This is not even to mention the chemicals that have profound effects on our microbiome, like antibiotics, and the stuff that’s in your municipal water system is shocking. And all of the toxins in your municipal water system have an acceptable level, right, which is basically like the water system in your city saying, Well, you know, we reduced it to a certain level and this is good enough, well, good enough for the government is not good enough. For me, it’s not good enough for my patience. That’s why I recommend filtered water. We’re gonna dive into water quality and allergies because it’s a very interesting topic and another video, light, light drives our hormones and neurotransmitters, it shapes all aspects of light life, excuse me, artificial light at night is associated with immune system disorders and specifically allergic diseases. And this is very well laid out in the literature. Although if you ask me, the people researching it don’t really understand the effects of that they haven’t studied it in a way that really shows that artificial light at night specifically, can really radically alter your risk of allergic diseases. This is in part due to the fact that use of artificial light screens TV, whatever pulls you out of the sunlight because you don’t use a screen outdoors and bright sunny days. It’s hard to see. Right? So lack of sunlight is associated with allergies independently. But these two problems go hand in hand, right? This is also why air pollution urbanization is associated with allergy because these kids are living in an urban environment. there’s not as much space and opportunity to roam outside. There’s dangers that are unique to our built environment like cars, freeways, crime, they’re staying indoors, they’re on screens, they’re not getting any sunlight. It’s a disaster. Okay, vitamin D very important. And you don’t get this when you live indoors and are addicted to a bunch of tech devices as so many modern kids are.
Unknown Speaker 12:41
So by moving indoors and relying on artificial light at night, we’ve created the perfect storm to confuse the immune system. I want to mention that this is in part due to its effects on melatonin melatonin has a very powerful impact on directing your immune system. And this is part of why moving away from the equator results in higher incidence in many studies that we’ve done, have allergic and autoimmune diseases. This is one reason why prudent sun exposure is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Melatonin plays a key role in maintaining your immune systems health and tolerance and depriving yourself of sunlight and, and bathing an artificial light that’s very bright and full of blue and green light at night is obviously bad for your circadian rhythms and therefore your melatonin levels and therefore your immune system. Not surprisingly, as I said before, kids who spend all their time staring into screens, spend more time indoors, have more asthma, have more allergies, very clear connection here. We’re going to talk more about how light shapes the immune system and future webinars. Finally, the EMF electromagnetic radiations it’s tinfoil hat time, right? So what are they they’re artificial microwave radio wave and electrical and magnetic fields. We have very, very, very low exposures to these in nature, several 1000 to 10s of 1000s of fold increases in our exposure or what we find in a typical home,
Unknown Speaker 14:02
unless you’ve done some kind of mitigation, right? EMF have documented effects on the immune system. I can give you whole book chapters that are from before I was born on this, it’s not controversial, it’s very clear. Could they be driving the increase in allergic disease prevalence and severity? No one to my mind has done really the kind of studies I’d like to see, but guess what no one’s getting paid to. So nobody does, right. But these are some really interesting papers that anyone who’s skeptical of this should look into. And there’s a lot of confounding variables here. I don’t want to get into the you know the limitations of these study designs. But there’s, like I’ve shown you here plenty of papers that show you how energetics from the environment can alter your immune systems response. And remember, this all goes back to mediations of your immune response by the central nervous system where the central nervous system is fundamentally in control of how hormones and neurotransmitters are functioning at any given moment. And you can radically alter somebody’s immune response by changing their perception of reality. It’s amazing, right? So this researcher, I want to point out named kimata. And tau in Japan did these really interesting papers some time ago, they’re relatively recent, on the effects of different energetic stimuli, let’s just say, on the immune response, he found enhancement of allergic skin responses in patients playing video games, or near a frequently ringing mobile phone. Okay. He’s published multiple papers on this, he found that listening to Mozart really reduces the allergic scan responses that Beethoven does not, don’t ask me what that’s about. microwave radiation increases allergen specific ice production.
Unknown Speaker 15:51
You have more papers down here, very clear effects on human immune cells. You also have some very interesting papers from Leo Hansen and his research group in I think it’s Sweden, who looked at how, for example, just looking at a television or a computer can change how your immune response, specifically your allergic response can be modified, right? Why don’t I have more data on this? Like I said, No one’s getting paid to study this in a robust way. Do you think there’s going to be a link that comes out eventually I do. But don’t hold your breath. Because like I said, no one’s gonna pay for those studies. We’re gonna explore this in greater detail in a future date. Food, everyone who talks about allergies is totally obsessed with food, right? You go out into the blogosphere, and pretty much everything about allergic diseases is what should I eat, so I don’t get allergic diseases. And there’s certainly lots of foods that have a lower tendency or lower likelihood of inducing allergic responses. But there’s virtually no food on planet earth to which someone cannot have an allergic response. That’s a long story, it’s a big kettle of fish. not going to get into all of that we’re just gonna stick to the basics today, which are really important and extremely helpful for the vast majority of people struggling to figure out what they should eat, regardless of their medical problems. So modern foods are full of fake ingredients that can trigger allergies. This is very well documented in the literature. It’s fallen out of favor with a lot of allergists for political reasons that I don’t want to get into. But at the end of the day, one of the things you can do if you’re not sure what you’re reacting to, and you’re having allergic symptoms is you can just eliminate stuff from your diet. And you can go back to an elemental diet, which is just single ingredient foods, instead of shopping in the processed food sections of the grocery store, you’re just buying things in the produce section, at the butcher counter at the seafood counter, in the dairy section, or you know, milk section, whatever you want to call it. Now, it’s not just dairy right? And you’re, you’re eliminating things one at a time to see if it yields an improvement in your symptoms. Okay. This is very well, well established to work for a lot of people. And like it or not, there’s so many things that conventional allergy testing doesn’t pick up on as sensitivities. And you hear story after story about people who say I changed my dish detergent, I changed my you know, laundry detergent, I stopped using these dryer sheets I stopped. And that’s just the personal care products, right, lumping that in with food because it’s something that your body comes into contact with. When it comes to food, you know, someone said, Well, I stopped eating pine nuts and I got better, I stopped eating meat and I got better. It’s remarkable how what a variety of of things can do this and specifically the food additives, like people don’t realize they’re reacting to the sulfites or the nitrates or they’re reacting to the artificial flavoring or artificial flavor enhancer Sony ingredients in our food now it’s unbelievable. The other thing about modern food is that it’s ultra processed. It’s devoid of essential nutrients. Many of these vitamins and minerals are essential to maintain immune system tolerance. So when you strip them out of your food, you’re creating the perfect setup for the patient to develop issues with eating those foods due to allergies because the immune system doesn’t have the basic minerals and vitamins to maintain tolerance. Okay. We are going to explore this more in future videos for now. That’s the really high level lessons for how food affects allergic disease. It’s a really remarkable piece of it. But I want to underline the fact that most of my colleagues most people out in the you know health and wellness infospace don’t appreciate it, which is if you’re not addressing other things, all the other potential contributing factors, you will make it you will make you will miss you will make mistakes, patients will not get better. And that’s why it’s important to pay attention to the whole picture. So what can we do to protect ourselves from or recover from allergic diseases we can return to a more natural lifestyle, diet and environment. How do we diagnose allergies,
Unknown Speaker 19:55
what are the most important steps we can take to treat or reverse them. That’s something to be taking To the patient’s individual context, which is what I do with patients one on one, there are so many diagnostic modalities out there. And it’s amazing to me how many people come to me who say, I had testing, I wasn’t allergic to anything. And we do some kind of other testing. And we do identify something. It’s also been a remarkable experience for me to have patients come to me who didn’t want to do any testing, we didn’t do any testing, we just stopped certain things and eliminated certain things. And all of a sudden, they’re getting better. And this goes on and on and on. Sometimes they got to change the pattern of their eating. Sometimes they got to change the timing of their eating, sometimes they’ve got to change something about their air quality, and then their food problems go away. It’s amazing. There’s so much to this. And there’s so much therapeutic potential that is being going untapped in the conventional medical world, because people don’t have time with their doctors, which of course I insist on taking with my patients, because it’s how I get good results. Anyway, if you want more information on how to stay healthy in our modern world, subscribe to my monthly newsletter. It’s the only place that you will get my uncensored opinion.
